  • Tee was my manager in one of my first nursing leadership roles. She gave excellent support and guidance. She encouraged me to grow in my skills as a leader, and even encouraged me to go to leadership training. One thing that sticks out to me about Tee’s leadership is that she always seemed to know when to push her employees to do more/grow or whether it was a time to offer help and support. She always put the patients first and led by example not to make the easy or selfish decisions but to make decisions that would benefit the patients and provide the highest quality of care. She is not afraid to ask the hard questions. And she taught me that “Right is right, all day long.” I am forever grateful that I had the opportunity to work with her, to be led by her and to call her my friend.

  • There are various styles of leadership that give you insight into a leaders vision for the people they serve with and develop. Many leaders thrive on collaboration and servant leadership; however, it takes a leader with discernment and empathy for others to make change and impact on a whole community. Towahna has proven to be a leader who sees, hears, and feels the needs of those she supports and leads. Observing her leadership, she is a compassion leader who makes those who work with her feel valued and respected while working collaboratively to exceed her set expectations. She cares for her team members and demonstrates it through promoting belongingness, understanding, and inclusiveness.

  • I am a retired family physician. When I first met Tee Rhim I was the senior partner and managing physician of a six member family physician and one nurse practitioner group. I had been in practice for about thirty years. She joined our practice as the manager. Shortly after her arrival it became clear to me that this is what a practice manager is supposed to be. She was by far the best that I ever saw, and in thirty years, that says a lot. What I observed was a person with great interpersonal skills, superb management talent and warmth. We worked together for about six years. The practice had about thirty employees with a mix of full and part time. In addition to the challenges of supervising the practice, Tee oversaw a number of significant additional hurdles. She managed the implementation of the electronic record - a difficult issue for the relatively senior physicians. In addition to that we experienced a major addition/renovation to the physical plant. We continued to operate a full schedule somehow during that time. But the most important contribution she made was a change of culture. The physicians all grew up in the traditional model that the staff were there to “help us.” We were the most important part of the practice. The more progressive mindset is that we are all part of a team there to serve our patients, all in our own but different roles. Over the time I worked with her she accomplished that transition. This was a difficult idea to sell. The docs all realized one day that our teamwork was better, the office attitude was improved, and it was a more pleasant place to work. She subtly nurtured the changes and improvements were incremental. It is hard to understate how challenging this was. Early in our relationship I recognized the talent. When I told her that “you won’t be with me for long,” she was a bit incredulous. She said “I like it here.” I insisted that she would rise, and that is indeed what happened. I have always been grateful for my time with her.

  • Tee Rhim was my Director from 2015 until my retirement in 2021. Speaking to her qualities as a leader, these words come to mind: “Servant” - Tee practiced Servant Leadership. In an organization where we strived daily to achieve goals to provide excellent care to those we serve, Tee’s commitment to each of her direct reports - to listen, to walk beside, to be available, and her ability to persuade us to recognize other solutions or opportunities, exemplified characteristics of Servant Leadership. Tee always placed the opportunity to see our successes ahead of her own and consistently acknowledged and celebrated our achievements. “Vision” - Tee was excellent in both individual and team settings with her ability to guide and inspire others to achieve goals, and see beyond previous obstacles or failures. Her guidance increased confidence levels, developed stronger leaders, and empowered us to always do our best. “Authentic” Tee’s leadership encompassed the person as a whole - not just a person for what they could achieve for an organization. Tee always had a pulse on the well-being of each of her team members, because we, as humans, mattered to her. She worked hard to establish individual relationships with each of her direct reports and consistently verbalized her appreciation to us. Engagement such this builds trust within a team. I am a strong believer that good leadership is caring about, and supporting the employee as a whole, both professionally and personally, building a foundation of trust with each employee which in turn was rewarded with increased employee engagement, practice successes, and less employee turn over.
